How to Wear Wedding Rings

Wearing an engagement ring and wedding band together is a long-standing tradition that symbolizes the love and commitment of marriage. The engagement ring is typically given at the time of the proposal, while the wedding band is exchanged during the ceremony. The two rings are worn together on the left-hand ring finger, which is believed to be connected to the heart by a vein called the vena amoris. While there is no right or wrong way to wear your ring, we have compiled a list of the most popular ways to wear your wedding band.

Band on Bottom

The most traditional way to wear an engagement ring and wedding band is to wear the engagement ring on top of the wedding band. This is known as the "wedding ring set" or "bridal set," and it's how most people wear their rings. This practice dates back to ancient Rome, where it was believed that the vena amoris, a vein that runs from the fourth finger of the left hand, was directly connected to the heart. Although this belief of a vein that runs directly between the two has been dispelled, the sentimental value of wearing the band on the bottom persists.

Band on Top

Some people also prefer to wear their wedding band on top of their engagement ring. This is often done for practical reasons, as it can help protect the engagement ring from damage. It's also popular for those who want a more modern or unconventional look. Wearing the wedding band on top, the engagement ring can still be visible but is protected by the sturdier wedding band.

Just the Band

Furthermore, there are those who prefer to wear only their wedding band, without an engagement ring. This can be a matter of personal preference or practicality, as wearing just one ring is often more comfortable. Others may choose to wear their engagement ring only on special occasions or when they want to dress up their wedding band.

A Set

Some designers sell sets of engagement rings and wedding bands specifically designed to be worn together. These sets often feature complementary designs, such as matching metals or shared decorative elements, and are a great option for those who want a cohesive and coordinated look. Many designers also offer custom options, allowing couples to create a unique set of bridal jewelry tailored to their individual tastes and preferences. Ring sets can be an excellent choice for those who want to simplify choosing their bridal jewelry, as they offer a pre-coordinated option that eliminates the need to mix and match different styles.
